Gymnastics Star Olivia Dunne’s Devastating Injury Ends Her Career at the Age of 22

Olivia Paige “Livvy” Dunne, 22, announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics on April 17, 2025, after LSU’s elimination in the NCAA semifinals, citing a chronic knee injury

Over her five-year tenure (2020–25), she helped LSU capture its first NCAA title in 2024 and posted career highs of 9.925 on uneven bars and 9.9 on floor exercise.

Off the mat, Dunne became the most-followed NCAA athlete with 8.0 million TikTok and 5.3 million Instagram followers, generating a 2023 NIL valuation of $3.3 million and deals with Grubhub, Vuori, Bodyarmor, and American Eagle

Her retirement decision followed an avulsion fracture of the patella in March 2025—an overuse injury that detached a fragment of her kneecap and forced her out of senior night and the NCAA semifinal meet.

Realizing her recovery would be lengthy, Dunne opted to step away from competition

As a 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model and founder of The Livvy Fund—an initiative connecting female student-athletes with top brands—she has championed new NIL opportunities for women in sport

Dunne plans to focus on her health, explore new professional ventures, and spend time with her boyfriend, MLB pitcher Paul Skenes, as she begins life beyond the sport she called her “first love.”
