1971-S Eisenhower Dollar Prototype Several possibilities explain how this prototype ended up in collectors' hands. The start of the Eisenhower dollar production was marked by a public event, one of our favorites. A flawless rare coin sold for $264,000 in 2022.
Need to Know Although called a "silver dollar," most Eisenhower dollars aren't silver. Few commemorative Eisenhower silver dollars survive, but they're valuable.
1971-S Eisenhower Dollar Struck on San Francisco Assay Office Medal Another odd one. Somebody fed a copper-toned San Francisco Assay Office medal into the Eisenhower dollar minting apparatus during its inaugural strikes. Only one mixed coin with the Assay Office medal underneath Ike's profile exists. It sold for $40,800 in 2022.
Set 1973-S Eisenhower Dollar With Copper Planchet Indent This minting error wins. Two pieces make up the set. A copper planchet was laid on top of the dollar planchet, leaving Ike's face on the copper planchet and a gap in the dollar. This set sold for $40,250 at auction in 2008.
Eisenhower Dollar Die Cap 1977-D Another amazing minting error, this coin isn't like regular change. Edges are raised like a "bottle cap". It appears that an Eisenhower dollar stuck on the machine's die and was struck against the coins pushed through following it. Repeated hits curled the edges substantially. A uncommon and valuable mistake, this coin sold for $29,900 in 2006.
1977-D Eisenhower Silver Planchet Dollar Most Ike dollars aren't silver, so those with silver are valuable. Several were struck in 1976 for the bicentennial, but they were not scheduled to be made in 1977. About 15 silver planchets unintentionally entered the Denver Mint system in 1977, creating a unique coin. One cost $26,400 in 2023.
The 1977 Eisenhower Dollar Was Off Center Another odd error occurred at the San Francisco Mint in 1977. An Eisenhower dollar was struck 30% off center, thus only part of its design appears on the planchet. This rare error sold for $26,400 in 2021.
