Preserving a Collection of Old Coins Through Expert Technique

Old coins are not just pieces of metal; they’re windows into history, culture, and sometimes even fortune. To protect their value and legacy, proper preservation techniques are essential

Start by handling coins with clean, dry hands or wear cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt. Always hold them by the edges — never touch the faces, as even the lightest contact can cause scratches or tarnish.

Storage matters just as much. Keep coins in acid-free holders, flips, or albums made specifically for numismatics.

These prevent environmental exposure and physical damage. Avoid PVC-based plastics, which can degrade and damage coins over time.

Maintain a consistent, cool, dry environment — fluctuations in humidity or temperature can accelerate corrosion.

Regularly inspect your collection for signs of wear or environmental damage. If cleaning is absolutely necessary, consult a professional conservator; improper cleaning can instantly decrease a coin’s value

Label each coin clearly for easy identification, and keep documentation such as provenance or grading certificates safe.
