Republicans and Democrats Can Agree on This: Stop Minting Pennies

In today’s divided political world, it’s rare for Republicans and Democrats to agree on anything. But when it comes to pennies, many from both sides believe it’s time to stop making them.

Making a penny costs more than the penny is worth. The U.S. Mint spends about 2.5 cents to produce just one penny.

That means taxpayers are losing money every year just to keep this tiny coin in circulation

Many Americans also find pennies useless. Most people leave them in jars or throw them away. Businesses often round prices up or down to avoid using them

Other countries, like Canada and Australia, have already stopped making low-value coins—and it’s worked well for them.

Some worry that stopping penny production will raise prices. But experts say rounding usually balances out. In fact, fewer coins could make shopping faster and easier.

Both parties in Congress have introduced bills to end penny production, showing this is one issue where cooperation is possible.

The penny has been around for over 200 years, but times have changed. Ending its production could save the U.S. millions of dollars—and it's something both Republicans and Democrats may finally agree on.
