Social Security payment schedule: Why May has two checks

Some Social Security beneficiaries may receive three checks in their bank accounts this month.

Due to oddities in the Social Security Administration's schedule, recipients of Supplemental Security Income will get two payments in May: one for May and one for June.

SSI benefits are paid to around 7.4 million Americans each month who may be disabled or have low incomes. Approximately one-third of those who receive SSI also receive Social Security benefits. During the month of May, those individuals will ultimately get three benefits checks.

Calendar of SSI payments: Months with two checks due SSI beneficiaries will receive two payments in May, just like they did in February.

The SSA calendar indicates that the May SSI payment will be made on May 1st, and the June SSI payment will be made on May 30th. Since June 1st falls on a weekend, the June payment is made early.

This implies that SSI users will not get a payment in June, just as they did in March.

In August, SSI beneficiaries will receive two checks—the August payment on August 1 and the September payment on August 29—but no payment in the month of September, reoccurring this recurring calendar anomaly.

According to the SSA calendar, SSI beneficiaries will likewise receive two payments in October but none in November.
