The Double Eagle coin was sold for $7.2 million, and experts say more are still in circulation.

Coins that collectors think are valuable can fetch a good price.

For instance, in 2021, a Paquet Reverse Double Eagle from 1861 that had a face value of only $20 sold for an astounding $7.2 million through Heritage Auctions.

It is a rare version of the $20 gold coin that was produced during the Civil War and was designed by Anthony Paquet.

James Longacre, the head engraver of the US Mint at the time, created the iconic design on the coin's obverse.

Because the thinner rim design was thought to be impractical for bulk minting, only a small number of the variation were made.

According to Heritage Auctions, the coin that sold for $7.2 million in Mint State 67 is thought to be the nicer of the two copies that are in circulation from the Philadelphia Mint.

"This example stands at the absolute pinnacle of rarity and exquisite condition," the coin title states.

Only a small number of the extremely rare Paquet Reverse design coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint.
